How much caffeine is in coffee vs green tea?

How much caffeine is in a cup of coffee?

An 8oz cup of coffee contains 96mg of caffeine according to the USDA Food Data website. A 12oz “tall” cup of Pike Place Roast coffee from Starbucks contains 235mg of caffeine according to the Starbucks website.

Is there more caffeine in green tea?

Eight ounces (or 237ml) of green tea can contain up to 28mg of caffeine according to the Mayo Clinic or up to 38mg according to Lipton’s website.

Does caffeine cause headaches?

Do you ever feel like drinking a lot of coffee or tea gives you headaches? Actually, it might be the absence of caffeine that may give you a headache. “Cessation of caffeine use after chronic exposures leads to a withdrawal syndrome with headache as a dominant symptom”, according to this publication.

Why is there such a big difference in the amount of caffeine reported in coffee and tea?

Coffee and tea are both brewed from a natural product, and there is always variance in the amount of caffeine depending on growing conditions, specific varietals, and different processing methods. Most brewed coffee from cafes nowadays are made from Arabica beans – but note that a lot of instant coffees are made from Robusta beans which contain almost twice as much caffeine! Strength of the brew recipe varies between every cafe – ie. the ratio of coffee grounds to the amount of water used for brewing. Similarly for tea, brewing time and the amount of tea leaves are factors that will affect the amount of caffeine that ultimately ends up in your cup.
